UGREEN KVM Switch: Seamless Dual Monitor Switching

How I switch between gaming PC and work laptop with two monitors and zero cable swapping.

Working from home with a gaming PC presents a challenge: you want one desk setup, but two machines need access to the same monitors. Cable swapping is tedious and wears out ports. The solution? A proper KVM switch.

The Setup

  • Gaming PC: 2x DisplayPort outputs
  • Work Laptop: 2x DisplayPort outputs (via dock)
  • Monitors: 2x displays on an Ergotron HX monitor arm
  • The Bridge: UGREEN KVM Switch 2-in-1-out, dual DisplayPort

The UGREEN sits between both machines and the monitors. Two button presses and I’m switching from work to gaming (or reluctantly, gaming back to work).

Why This KVM?

Finding a dual DisplayPort KVM that actually works is harder than you’d expect. Many cheaper options:

  • Only support single monitors
  • Have terrible refresh rate support
  • Introduce noticeable input lag
  • Just… don’t work reliably

The UGREEN handles dual 4K displays without drama. Switching is fast - we’re talking a second or two for both monitors to come back up on the new source.

The Remote Button

This is a small thing that makes a big difference. The KVM comes with a wired remote button that you can stick wherever is convenient. Mine sits at the edge of the desk, easy to reach.

No crawling under the desk. No reaching behind monitors. Just press the button and switch.

Daily Workflow

Morning: Press button, work laptop appears on both screens. Coffee, emails, meetings.

Lunch/Evening: Press button, gaming PC takes over. Entirely different machine, same monitors, same peripherals.

The keyboard and mouse switch too (it’s a KVM, after all), so there’s genuinely nothing to unplug or reconnect.

Any Issues?

The initial setup required making sure both machines were outputting to the correct DisplayPort numbers. Once that was sorted, it’s been flawless.

Occasionally the work laptop takes an extra moment to recognise the displays after switching - maybe 3 seconds instead of 1. Not a dealbreaker, but worth mentioning.

The Alternative

Before this, I was manually swapping cables. DisplayPort cables specifically, because the work laptop dock and gaming PC both needed DP for the monitor refresh rates I wanted.

Swapping cables multiple times a day gets old fast. And DisplayPort connectors aren’t exactly designed for frequent plugging/unplugging.

The Verdict

The UGREEN KVM does exactly what it promises: two machines, two monitors, one button to switch between them. No lag, no hassle, no cable swapping.

If you’re running a dual-purpose desk setup, this is the kind of thing that makes you wonder why you didn’t buy one sooner.

Would I buy it again? Already recommending it to colleagues.
